nside the scale.  You will find a smooth design.  Weight on the pan is transferred vertically down a cylinder bar, which guided by a plexiglass support, bends a horizontal bar on wooden knife edges.  A strain gauge converts this movement to a resistance, send out on the wires you see here.

Also you can see the speaker, which beeps when there is too much weight, and when it is zeroing.
